About Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University Ranchi

Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University (DSPMU) in Ranchi has a rich history spanning nearly 185 years, dating back to 1839. It began as a Government English School, thanks to Major J.R. Ousley, a British official in Chhota Nagpur.

Over the years, the institution evolved through various stages. By 1875, it became Ranchi Zila School. In 1926, it started offering intermediate Arts courses and was part of Patna University.

In 1946, it was renamed Ranchi Government Degree College with Shri KP Sinha as Principal. Three years later, in 1949, it became Ranchi College and joined Bihar University in 1952. The institution continued to grow, starting postgraduate programs in 1951-52, and it has been advancing ever since.

In 2018, it was upgraded to a state unitary university under the RUSA Programme, marking a new chapter in its long and storied history.
